I've started the process of emailing the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, who is in charge of the Canadian Coast Guard. The Coast Guard is repsonsible for those types of issues on the lake. Once I find out who to email or write, I'll let everyone know so they can make it clear to them that the portage is an important part of the lake. I'll also forward the reply I get from them to anyone interested.

I sure hope the fix that thing properly because with the water being so low again, it's going to be tough to use for awhile.

Justin

So how low is the water compared to a "normal" level? Someone mentioned 6 ft low. This doesn't seem reasonable.

Thanks

Go to http://www.lwcb.ca for all the info you could ever want and more about the water levels on LOW. I would say it's at least a foot lower than what I have usually seen this time of year over the last 12 years of being at LOW at the resort.

Just discovered this sight...good idea....my question is....whitefish bay portage, is that the same as turtle portage? I have been going to the Souix Narrows area for over 30 years. This year, with my new GPS chartplotter, we plan to circumnavigate LOW, form Souix Narrows, counter clockwise to Warroad then back thru Turtle portage....I have not seen turtle portage or know anything about it....I have a 21' Lund with a 175 on it, can it go across Turtle portage?

Thanks....

Mike L.

   Mike,

I have gone across Turtle Portage in my 18' Crestliner with a 175 HP, so I believe you can do it with your 21'. If the portage trolley is not off the track. The scary part has been that you do not know when it will stop working. There have been people that have gone over only to find it out of working order when they try to return to the other side. I hope they will get the bugs out of the system this year as the working design is excellent but not dependable. Even if it is working though, have two or three people along to turn the drive wheel. It is a workout for the arms to get a good sized boat over.

With the low water level this year,it might not be the time for a lot of exploration. I was in the Morson area Memorial weekend for 8 days and the rocks are SCARY. Be careful and have fun, Mike Jensen.

Folks, on the water level. I measured recently. On a dock that the water was over last July 4, it is now 48 inches down to the water. That's vertical! So yes, the water is 4 feet down. It has come up an inch or two in recent days, but not much. This is the worst drought in more than 30 years for the border area, no real rain or snow since last July.
The question I have is that I heard the Turtle portage is knocking transducers off boat bottoms. Anyone heard anything about that?
Thanks. Wild Thing.

I have not heard anything from anybody about transducers being knocked off at the Turle Lake Portage. The wooden rollers that they had until two or three years ago would have had a high potential of doing just that, so I would never use it back then. The new set up is just like a set of trailer bunks on a miniature railcar. I have brought my 18' Crestliner over and back again with no worry about my transducer, speed sensor etc. The concern I got last year about the portage is that you never knew when the damn thing would fall off of the track. I wasn't about to go up in to Whitefish and then not be able to get back in to Sabaskong as I heard was happening to some folks. I wonder if the MNR has addressed some of these problems and remedied them going in to this year.

As of Memorial weekend nothing has been done. The OPP got their boat stranded on the lift that weekend. Luckily a group of our friends were there to help get the boat across. This might get some action started. The fishermen around Mylie's area were trailering their rigs over to Whitefish rather than take a chance on the portage. Personally I would wait until we hear that it is fixed right.

Hey....you guys have been great with the info on Turtle portage....thanks a lot!!!!!!! I am changing my plans to "Track Back" from Warroad......to Soiux Narrows.....I may just run down there from Snake Bay to look at it (the Portage).....my real concern is the Lake level....is it really 4 feet down? Should I bring a small step ladder to get from the boat to the dock?

Mike L.

If the thing keeps breaking, maybe we all need to put some pressure on someone. Who owns and operates the thing? Is it the MNR? Let's get on the local elected officials. Hard to believe the resorts in the area can't bring some pressure to bare on the issue as it's their livlihood. And a 90-minute drive, one way, isn't acceptable either. Any ideas?

The lake is down 4 feet from last years high water mark. It is about 2 feet lower than what is normal for this time of year.

As of two weeks ago nothing has been fixed. I wouldn't expecy any work to be done on it until this Fall. That is when they usually do their work. It is a shame!

I was there on June 22, it was very calm and my first visit to Turtle Portage....I was impressed but there was no way I was going to take my 20' Lund over that system. I played with it for about a half an hour and decided "no go" with the water so low....it is only a 30 minute trip from SIoux narowws (thanks to GPS)....we went to Warrod MN. from Sioux Narrows in 3 hours....across grand travis bay.....I'm sure many of you fish Grand Travese Bay.....no thanks , I'll stay in the North East of the lake in Whitefish bay. We returned across the bay two hours later and it took me 2 hours to go where it took me 22 minutes earlier........thank for the info....ML

Well maybe things will get fixed soon....on July 5th., there was a couple with two small children, got their boat stuck on the portage going into Whitefish. Two friends of mine attempted to help get the boat accross when one of them slipped on the rail and a peice of steel on the cart filleted his leg open. Fortunatly they got him to the hospital in Kenora in time to save the leg. The injured one is a Washington D.C. lawyer (Trial Lawyer), his girlfriend (who was there) works for John Ashcroft in the Justice Dept. My other friend, father of the girl, is also a very high profile lawyer......I'm sure that the MNR will hear of this one.

ML
