"lake of the woods"

I will be at Lake of the Woods in mid August. I am from Texas and basically fish for bass at Lake Fork. Have been to Lake of the Woods many times in the spring and have a pretty good understanding of techniques and baits for walleyes and small mouth for that time of year.

Can anyone give advise on summer baits and techniques? I am pretty sure it will be very different from spring fishing.

Thanks for your help.

I will be staying at Norms on Oak Island. I am looking for advise concerning what baits to use for smallies, type of water walleyes are usually in etc. In the spring we usually fish walleyes off the bottom using leeches, minnows and night crawlers. Does that pattern work in august? Regarding smallies, we usually get them in shallow water with crank baits, spinner baits and small grubs or small jigs. Do they stay up shallow in the summer?

Here in Texas, even though it is hot we can usually catch a number of "grass fish" (all large mouth bass) up shallow but also get them deep on carolina rigs and even jigging spoons. I was out this weekend and the water temp was 94 but you could get them on top water morning and evening. Overall, I certainly prefer Lake of the Woods for lots of reasons. You guys have a real treasure there.

Thanks,

John Steffens

For eyes I would start around mid-lake structure and points. Pull a spinner/crawler or spinner/leech until you find active fish. Once the fish are located I like to go to jig/crawler or jig/leech. I like to make a couple passes, if I graph fish I'll give it one more pass, if not move on. Shad Raps around the reefs may work also.
For bass I would suggest rock points and sunken reefs. Work Mepps, Shad Rap, Spinner bait, tube bait over the point or the top of a reef and you should find fish. You will also pick up some nice smallies working the reefs with spinner/crawler for eyes if you go up on top the reef. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
