"Where is everyone? Crankbaits for 'eyes"
| |
Where the heck is everyone? This board hasn't seen a new message in more than a week. I know some people must be reading it, so weigh in! Is anyone using crankbaits for walleyes on or near reefs? If so, how do you fish them? Using bottom bouncers or long-line or what? I know some guys do well with them but it would seem like snag city. Also, any preference in models or colors? Any updates on the bite lately? Hello? Hello? Is anyone out there?

I was up from July 12th through the 19th. we did well on the open water reefs, including Three Sisters. The numbers were down from previous July trips but the average size was up. We also tried trolling cranks. I am new at trolling cranks for eyes in the Morson area som I was still learning like you. We trolled with lead line in Rabbit Narrows and the Ball Field. We also trolled regular line on a large reef 8 miles Southwest of Brule Island. Lost a few cranks and boated two small sauger. I plan to troll cranks again but it will be in the Spring or Fall when they are relating to shorelines more. |

Haven't posted since the 30th. Don't have much to talk about since I haven't been on LOTW since the 4th of July. It seems as if weddings, reunions, and work have taken priority over fishing. I'm going to have to work on this. Won't be up again until October. Hope you guys save some eyes for me. Just started pulling cranks for eyes a couple years ago. Happened out of frustration. We were working a large reef and catching pretty steady. Wind came up and boat control was imposible. Abandoned the jig and tied on cranks. Started working around and over the reef. Picked up a couple. I find myself pulling cranks only when boat control is an issue or the fish are tough to find. Cover Ground!! I don't know all the tricks of the trade and I find Cranking somewhat boring. I like to finess the fish, get on top of them and work em up. Good luck on the big lake and hope to hear some success stories soon. |

Thanks for the info. We were up July 19-27 and caught fish every day , biggest was 8.2. Crawlers on spinners seemed to be the best. But sometimes the fishing would get slow and I'd notice fish suspended, just off the reefs. I wonder if crankbaits might be a way to get at them. Or maybe they won't bite. I'm heading up Aug. 15 for five days and will report back after that.
