"Algae Bloom"

It's time to put a misconception to rest. After speaking with a guy who worked for the Minnesota DNR for over 30 years, I can tell you that both the may fly hatch and algae bloom are a sign of fertiliy and very good indicators of a HEALTHY LAKE. I was told that the time to worry is when you don't see any may flies and there is no algae.

I got him to write down the scientific explanation of it all last summer, but I can't remember where I put it of course. However, the short version is that it's a good thing and more of a mental block for anglers to get over than anything else. The fish are still there. The fish still have to feed.

Also, I've seen the algae bloom in Saskaskong much, much, much worse in the 12 summers I've spent on the lake. People have told me that it's been bad is some spots and not so bad in others, since it started in July.

Temps cooled off a bit today too. Around 80 or so was the most it got to and it looks like it is going to be reasonable in the forecast for awhile now.

Half inch of rain Wednesday night (20th) as well. Still very dry though, no open fires allowed and they don't reccomment fires or any kind on the islands.

I'm no biologist, but I know a few. They agree that mayflies area indeed good indicator of aquatic health. But the kind of algae bloom that LOW has right now, they say is way too fertile. You don't see Rainy Lake or Red Lake or any other major nearby lake with this kind of bloom. There can be to much fertility, which may be good for some things but not for others. Sorry to disagree with you, but I don't think it's good. Whether its from agriculture or leaky septics or bogs or all of the above, there's too much nutrients in the lake...

Hey, no worries about having a contrary opinion. You have your "experts" and I have mine. I can agree to disagree.

One of Duane Lund's newer books is called "LOW: The last 50 year and the next 50" or something to that effect. A friend of mine read it and said it had a lot of positive things to say about the strength of the fishery. I'm going to start reading it this week (I've got "Muskies on the Shield" almost done and that is a wealth of information for anyone from a beginner to an experienced angler) as we sell copies of it. It might be interesting for anyone concerned about the future of LOW.

See you around LOW.
