"Big Northern Pike"
| |
Northern pike fishing was great the whole season so far. we caught many many pike over 34"with alot in the high 30""class in my boat. no 40" but saw a couple and had at least one on. it looks like the slot has to be improving the average size.Has anyone else on this site having the same kinda season with alot of nice size pike this year? Also caught a 34"pike last weekend in obabican that had a big crappie sideways in his stomach and still ate a bait. bazil |

>Around Nestor Falls the pike fishing has been down. Yes, I >have caught some really nice sized pike this year including >one that went 20 lbs., but most fish were slot sized and not >keepers. There seems to be a decline in the numbers of >small pike which worries me. I have been fishing lake of the woods for 50 yrs the 22 to 28 inch Northens are depleeted. This has taken place over the past five years, what has changed, low water levels during spawning season.Cormorant's eating them along with the larger northen's and muskies.Slot size needs to be looked at and better water control during spring spawing season. |

I'll be honest when I say that I haven't fished LOTW in a few years, but I do miss it much and I plan on returning in the near future. I've been checking out the web site of the fishing resort we always stayed at, and I'll admit that I've been marveling at some of the photos of recent northern pike catches posted on it. Maybe we were lousy fishermen, but we never caught any pike that large. It's nice to see. We were 100% catch & release fishermen, but I was amazed at the amount of others that weren't when it came to northerns. Are the larger sizes the effect of the practice of catch & release becoming more prevalent, or is it the slot limit working as it was intended? Is it a combination of both? I might be alone on this one, but I'd love to see both the northern and the muskie as solely catch & release fish. I would think there'd be a heck of a lot of trophy fish that way. Bhomis |

I too have experienced some huge Pike this year. In fact, the biggest ever for us in 20+ years. I caught a fat 41", 2 big 39 inchers, several 34 and 35 inchers and my wife caught her largest, a 38 incher. You are right, though, I haven't caught too many pike under 5 or 6 pounds. The only place I've seen the smaller pike is up in Obabikon Lake. All of my big pike came from Sabaskong. Lack of smaller fish is a legitimate concern for the future, but its nice to see the big ones thrive. |
