We were over the portage in September and it was functional, but very labor intensive.(18'lund with 115)
Last weekend (3-19-05) we sledded through there and did not notice any upgrades to the system. (open water comming out of Turtle lake.)
As for what the MNR has planned I do not know.

   Yea very labor intenive...

I did see a guy last year that used an attachment to his chain saw to pull the sled over the portage.. I hope something is done.. I liked the canel system they had,but that was a long time ago.

I spoke with someone a the MNR office in Kenora today and was told the portage will be ready to go by walleye opening weekend and the same stystem will be in place for now.

Any changes have to go through the process of public notices and input through meetings, etc so I doubt anything will be done to change it before the fall. I think the plan is still to go back to a system with rollers eventually.

The contact at the MNR didn't know for sure if it was ready, but said it woudl be for walleye opener. I haven't talked to anyone that has been up that far yet. I'll post somethere here if I can find out anything.

I recieved a telephone call this morning from the MNR and they tenetively have plans to unlock the portage late today.("we are doing work in the area and we will unlock it") I then asked if we can plysically use it on Saturday and his response was "yes".

So as for now it looks encouraging.

So, "unlock" means that it will be not "locked" or what?? I'm not clear on what they are going to do.

Thanks,

Bill Krejca

   Bill,
When we sledded through in March it had a lock on it to render it unuseable.

   Jeff,

Thanks for the info, I thought it was almost unusable without the lock.

Good luck,
Bill Krejca

We did make it over the portage on Saturday. The cable is loose and the wheels need to be greased... but any time you get over and back is a victory. Besides, no fish, wind, rain, sleet and snow....oh did I mention wind..... it was great to be back on LOW................
