"Fishing lake of the woods"
| |
I have a few questions... First off this will be my first time fishing lake of the woods, and I was wondering if the lake is frozen at this time of year? Second I wanted to know some good boat rental places on the lake, and do I need a license to operate a boat there? third, Hows the fishing this time of year? And what should I expect from 3 days of boating/fishing this lake? Any special things I need to know before embarking on such a trip?? Thanks Your fellow angler, Walter |

Also, I was wondering if there are any restricted parts of the lake, since it borders canada? I dunno how the whole thing works up there, Im from texas looking forward to a nice week of fishing the lake, without any problems. Thanks again,

Have to keep in mind that walleye season closes April 15 of each year until the middle of May (whatever the third Saturday of the month is) and muskie season is closed til the third Saturday of June. |

Ive spoken with a friend and he told me that I need some kind of permit to be on the lake..? How is muskeg bay for canoes? Is it safe? And what islands around muskeg are good for camping? Id like to canoe the lake, and find a nice sucluded spot to camp out for a week or so, any suggestions? Your fellow angler,

You'll need a crown land camping permit if you're going to be making camp on the canadian side of the lake. It sounds like you'll be on the US side though so I'm not sure of the regs for that side. Most of the people from this board are more familiar with the Sabaskong Bay area from Morson to Nesto Falls. You might want to get in touch with a resort on the US side of the border. Sportsmans Lodge, Zipple Bay, Wigwam are a couple places in Baudette that might be able to answer your questions. |

Hi walter: I think you should ponder crossing into canada for the adventure you are talking about.. for one thing the eastern side of LOTW has many islands and is great for caneoing.. the US side for the most part is open water. And Man can it get rough. LOTW is Huge and in the open water it is like the ocean when the wind comes up. Stick to Morson Ontario. only 35 miles from US. just out of baudette Minnesota.. I guarentee you will thank me after the trip.. I have a cabin on the canadian side and LOVE it. If you need information on a good resort to get info and such.. a boat and motor etc. That Place would be Mylies Place. The people are great there and I have been going out of there for about 20 years. they would know what you need to do about an island permit etc. Thier number is 1-807-488-5616. Have a great trip, but be forwarned... Once you come, you will have to come back. Hope this helps Dan |
