"Radio reception"

In my search to my question of weather or not I can use VHF radios, I was told they would not get reception at LOTW because they have to have "line of sight" in order to reach each other. With the many Islands is this an issue or even true?

I use a VHF with an 8' antenea and can hear boat traffic from 10+ miles away. I have also talked to resorts up to 20 miles away. VHF radios are a must on LOTW. Too many rock piles to not have communications.

Definitely use an 8' antenna. We travel all over the lake and don't have any problem communicating.

I,ve been using a VHF Marine Band radio on LOW for several years now. Unless you are right up against a hill or wall in the direction you want to send or receive they have a range of many miles. I have spoken to people up to ten miles away or more several times. The radio is a must on LOW.
