How to go bottom fishing...
Be sure to see the rod splint, reel splint, and the reel mount pages before reading on. Bottom fishing with this apparatus is extremely easy. Make sure that the reel you are using has its handle facing outward. With the arm you are using to operate the reel, release the line, and let the line out until it hits the bottom. Engage the reel when you are satisfied with the amount of line let out. To retrieve the line or reel in a fish, lift up the rod as best as you can, slip the loop of the reel splint over the reel handle and reel in as necessary.
Personal note
Everyone is different, but I find bottom fishing to be the biggest test of my strength. Maybe it is due to the fact that when bottom fishing, I am typically fishing in deep water. This usually makes for stronger currents, which calls for a heavier sinker. Add a strong fighting saltwater fish such as a flounder or fluke, and you’ve got yourself quite a challenge - but it’s worth it. Sometimes, I find that I have to reinforce the Velcro strap that goes over my hand in the reel splint by placing duct tape over the strap. I don’t find that the tape bothers me much.
Video Demonstration
To get a better idea of how this apparatus works when bottom fishing, take a look at this video footage taken of me reeling in a two pound porgy (scup). Viedo dial-up modem. Video high speed connection.
