About the fishing rod splint
Have an occupational therapist help you build this splint. If you do not have an occupational therapist available, you will need someone else who is somewhat handy to build it. I personally do not know of a way to build the fishing rod splint without the use of conventional splinting materiel such as Orthoplast or Kay-Splint. I will be honest that when the idea of this apparatus first came to me, and I had yet to build anything, I simply wrapped the rod around my forearm rather tightly with an ace bandage. Doing that for a prolonged time may cause red marks on your skin, but I might recommend it for a short time when trying to figure out the exact location and position you are most comfortable with having the rod placed.
Building the fishing rod splint is, in my opinion, somewhat more difficult than building the reel splint. I recommend that you mold the splinting material around your forearm, wrist, and hand, leaving one side open so that your arm can slide in and out sideways. When you are comfortable with how the splint feels, decide where you want to place the fishing rod on the splint. My recommendation is to place the rod on the splint where the palm will be facing up. Mold some extra splinting material over the rod butt and let it adhere to the splint. Place velcro straps on the splint where appropriate in order to keep the splint from falling off.
