AUGUST 2004 FISHING PICTURES

Mylie's Place Resort

Well August has been Muskie Mania month so far.  I thought July was great for muskies and here we are a week into August and it's beat July already!  The guys from First WIS are creating a stir with their exploits and other muskie fisherman have been doing very well also.  Here are some of the pictures of the nicer fish.  After awhile, the mid to high 30 inch class of fish isn't worth wasting film on, right guys?  Remember to click the picture to enlarge the photos.  Do get the feel for how big some of these muskies are, you have to see them in a larger version of the picture.

Saturday July 31 through Tuesday August 3; Gil Hamm Tourament Pre-Fishing
Started the week off pretty strong, mostly mid 30's to low 40's.

                                                   38 inches                       39 inches                       39 inches
Len McCarty (First Wis, M.I.) had a pretty decent few days early in the week.  He probably wishes he could have stayed through the end of the week to get in on some of the action the jumped off after he left. It's a good thing boat partner Greg Keegan was good with the net, eh?

                                                                          38 inches              44.5 inches
Dan Husby (First Wis, M.I.) pulled in a couple of nice ones as well to get his week off to a good start.

Dan Klein (First Wis, M.I.)        Paul Michels (First Wis, M.I.)

                                                                41 inches                                       45.5 inches
Dan Klein pulled in a nice fatty that measured 41, while Paul Michels's 45.5 incher was his personal best.  Morson sure beats the NW Angle!! Right, Paul??  It's nice to see Paul get his P.B., especially after helping boat partner Len Rubesch net all 5 of those muskies Len caught in one day last year!

Bill Nuyttens (S.O.B, M. I.)        Tom Harvey (SD)

                                                             50 INCHES!!!                        52 INCHES!!!
Bill wasn't able to come stay with us this year, but stopped by with a picture of his 50 incher (19.5" girth) caught on August 2 so we could keep his wife at home informed by email!  Great fish and great picture, Bill.  We look forward to having you back again next year with some South of the Border Muskies, Inc friends.

Meanwhile, on another part of the lake the same day, Tom Harvey (of South Dakota) found the fish he's been chasing for 20 years.  After a net problem last year with another 50 inch class fish, Tom's wife Lois snared this big 52 incher and I'm not sure who was more excited.  This was the last polaroid in the camera so we're hoping for a couple better shots when the 35 mm film gets developed.  I think we need a trip to the new Wal-Mart one hour photo lab in Fort Frances.

Aug 4, 5, 6: Gil Hamm Memorial Chapter Challunge Tourament

Ok, now I have to both warn you and remind you of something.  The warning is that some of the following pictures will make avid muskie fisherman drool, shake and get the urge to call in sick for a week and get up to Lake of the Woods.  Now I'm not saying that staying at Mylie's is the key to catching big muskies, but who can argue with success, right? HAHAHA  The reminder is to click the photos to get a better idea of the monstrous size of some of these lunkers.

Aug 4: Tourament Day 1, the boys from First Wis are narrowly in the lead.

                                                          Tom Smetana                           Len Rubesch

                                                              40 inches                                  48 inches
Tom's 40 incher and Len's 48 incher (matching his own personal best) were a couple of the fish that helped put First Wis in the lead after day one.  The catch of the day though belonged to..........

Dick Stelter - Muskie Master!!!

This 54.5" hawg had a girth of 23 inches.  It's the first legal muskie caught by a Mylie's guest that I'm aware of since the 54" minimum came into effect.  Now you have to understand something about Dick and his boat partner, Gene Coyer.  Dick and Gene were the last ones out to fish and the first ones to come in for a rest in the afternoon.  I guess you don't have to fish real hard when you know where the big ones are.  Right, Guys??  Perhaps needless to say, but Dick's monster leads the way for the $50 gift certficate from Moore's Lures for the largest muskie of the year.  I would have to give Dick the unofficial Mylie's record for biggest muskie of the modern era (or at least since our time as hosts began in 1992.)  If anyone has any info on a bigger muskie caught by a Mylie's guest, please let me know via email (jwgaudry@hotmail.com).

August 5: Tournament Day 2, First Wis cranks it up a notch and leads by a wide margin.

So what do you for an encore when you catch a legal LOW muskie?  Well you get right back out there and try to help your team, of course.
48.5 inches                     53" x 24"   Same fish with a better view of the stomach.

So again Dick and Gene meander out on the lake well after everyone else and come back shortly before Len and Paul.  The morning produced two more huge fish so a little lunch and a beer or two is in order.  Len also caught and released the northern below in the morning session.  That leads the way for the $50 gift certicate after Dick's boat partner, Gene Coyer, caught and released a 41 inch northern earlier in the week to hold the top spot for a few days.
                                                      July 31                                          <== Aug 5 ==>
                                         Gene's 41" Northern                   45" northern            50" x 25" muskie
However, Len wasn't done for the day yet.  As if two 50" class fish in the same group in two days wasn't enough (there was also a 50" fish caught by a different group fishing the tournament for a total of 3 in two days so far.)  Len boated this real fat 50 incher (25" girth) to count two fish in the 50 inch class in the same day for the First Wis team.  We might have a new Muskie Master in town!  No wonder they were in first place by a pretty good margin after Day 2.

August 6: Tourament Day 3,  OH SH!T, What the heck happened??

Well despite a big lead and 4 more mid 30 inch muskies, our First Wisconsin boys ended up getting beat by one little, lousy, measely, bloody point.  Now there seems to be a lot of confusion as to how the second place team came back from such a wide margin.  There was also some concern over whether or not everyone was registered properly by the hosting chapter so we're not sure what to think.  There may be an FBI investigation into the matter, but one thing is for certain.  We at Mylie's are very proud to host the great guys from the First Wisconsin chapter of Muskies, Inc.  Everyone was talking about "Mylie's Camp" over at that "other place" and the owners of the "other place" were awfully nervous that their little tourney was headed a mile or two west if the First Wis guys took the title and the right to name the next host of the challunge.  I haven't had a week that was more fun than this.  Being around to see the pictures of all those huge fish was really something.

The total count for the chapter outing was more than 40 muskies over 30 inches (including 3 that were 50 inches or better.)  Len's 53, Dick's 54.5 and Paul's 45.5 were all personal best fish and that is quite an achievement in itself.  There was also a PB achieved by another group when Hank Daniel's got a 48 incher during an evening session (see photo a little farther down.)  We hope to get some pictures from those guys as well as they did excellent fishing muskies in the evening all week long.

Daug Kauffman and Joe Aldworth of Wisconsin also landed 2 fish 50 inches or better during the week.   The first one (50") came on Day 1 of the tournament and the second (51") came Saturday night right before having to come and and pull out to go home after their 8 night stay.

                                                       Doug Kauffman                                    Joe Aldworth
                                                   50 inches of nice muskie                             51" x 24"

After the hubbub of the tournament results died down on Friday night, there was some chatting about the great week that was.  Spots and lures were discussed and the Beaulieu's arrived again to do some muskie hunting.  Randy had been home all week just dying everytime I emailed or called saying another 50 incher was landed so he was anxious to get out there.  Dick and Gene took Randy out to their secret spot and showed him how and where to fish the structure.  Well wouldn't you know it, Ronda nailed this 52 incher on the spot Dick and Gene showed them.  That is one of the most classy things I've ever seen.  Muskie fisherman can be very tight with their spots and to have someone take you out right to a spot where they caught multiple 50 inch fish is almost unheard of.  Congrats to all our members of the 50 inch club this week.  Let's keep it going!!

                                                      Ronda's 52 incher                       Randy with a 40 incher (Aug 8)
Notice the grimace as she struggles to hold it long enough for a picture or two.

That makes 7 fish in the 50 inch class caught by guests of Mylie's this week.
Beat that, Red Wing!!! HAHAHAHA

The Slaubaugh Group

The Slaubaughs got serious about their fishing this year; bringing 3 boats and going through 10-14 dozen minnows a day.  They caught and released a lot of walleyes all week long.  This is the result of one of their trips out on the water.  When you have 20 people, you have to work hard to feed them all, right Dave?  They even found some time to water ski a little bit.  Thanks for reminding us that there are more than just muskies in the lake!

Another 50 incher caught Aug 24!! Holy Crap!  This is another one caught not too far from home.  We have photos of 12 fish that are 50 inches or better posted on the Muskie Picture Page so far this year.
