The following are a collection of the short weather,
fishing and other news summaries from throughout the season.
October 28
Went to see Shania Twain in St. Paul, MN. Got front row seats with
the help of a very good friend that lives there. Enjoyed the show immensely.
Will see her again at every opportunity. Shania is the Queen of all
things.
September 13 -20
The weather was pretty agreeable and the fishing was excellent. Crappies
were biting in both Miles Bay and OB. A lot of walleyes, though mostly
smaller, were caught as well. Fishing has been great already this week
(20, 21, 22) despite some windy and rainy conditions. Water temps are
dropping and trolling for muskies should be starting any time now. Muskies
have been a little quiet with the cold front, but someone moved 3 fish and
boated a 37 incher on the weekend.
September 1-13
Weather was really hot the first part of the month, as much as 90 (which
is 15 degrees ABOVE normal) and then cooled off a bit the second week. We
got some needed rain last week, although it wasn't much. There was
a lot of wind, which made it hard to fish and the results showed it. There
were not a lot of people around to fish, as our slow period was in effect,
but the fishing was tough. People were getting crappies in Obakikon
Lake, but the low water is making it tougher to get in there. There
seems to be a little less pressure on the area with the reduced traffic,
and the crappies were really biting already this week (Sept 13, 14.)
I saw some northerns from OB and some smaller walleyes from Miles already
this week as well. Stay tuned for pics on the September 2003 Fish Page,
as it was a busy day in the fish house on Sunday (Sept 14.) Weather
has been good so far this week and the temps are cooling off a little, which
will help lower the water temp. This should turn the fish on too, we
hope!!! We still have a few openings for the rest of September and
October has openings after the first weekend and we'll be
OPEN UNTIL
October 25 this year, for all you later fall fisherman and duck hunters.
Give us a call and try a fall trip. It's my favourite time of
the year, personally. I might even tell you where my secret October
walleye hole is, if you're lucky!!
Labour Day Weekend
Labour Day weekend was a success in all areas except
the walleye fishing. People caught some crappies up in Obabikon Lake
and Miles Bay, while lots of small walleyes were caught in both the rocks
and sand and shore areas. The wind was a little tough to deal with,
but everyone had a great time. It's the unofficial end of summer and
we would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our guests and customers
for making our summer season successful when other places had down years.
We hope that our continued level of success is an indication of the happiness
of our customers. We'll strive to make Mylie's Place better each year
we're here. The best feeling you get as someone that works at a resort
is a comment about how much someone enjoyed their stay. Thanks, everyone.
We'll be seeing a lot of you soon for your fall trip.
August 23-30
Be sure to see some of the photos on the
August 2003 Fish Page. The weather
cooled off last week and we got some rain. Fishing was slow all around
as the wind blew after the mid week storm. Fairly quiet around
the lake as people are getting ready to head back to work and school.
Augsut 16 - 23
OK everybody, the slacker finally made it back to work after a couple
of weeks on the IR/inactive list. From what I heard, the fishing was
pretty good the first couple of weeks in August. I'll be posting some
nice pictures in the next few days from the fish caught during that time
as proof that you can catch fish in August when the algae bloom is in the
lake. The weather has been very hot and very dry. We finally
got about a half of an inch of rain the night of August 20, but more is needed
to help cool things off. Forrest fires are burning on Northern Ontario
near Minaki as well as in Manitoba and BC. Many people have been evacutated
from towns in BC and a lot of people have lost their homes. Here's to
a little help from the skies above to reduce the fire hazard. Things
are quiet at this time of the year, but the Morson Bass Classic tournament
will have some activity around the lake this weekend (August 23-24) and then
the Labour Day Weekend will see things pick up again. The middle of
September, as well as the first week in October, are very busy so if you're
still thinking about a fall trip, it's time to make the arrangements.
It's good to be back at one of the most beautiful places in the world.
Thanks to all those concerned enough to ask about me and send me good wishes
while I had to be away. Feel free to send up some emails again as I'm
back to checking a couple times a day. I'm sorry for any inconvenience
that my not being able to answer emails may have caused.
July 31 - August 18
Slacking off due to leg injury. Watching movies, keeping
leg elevated, and generally being bored all day cause I missed everyone
at the lake.
July 5 - 19
It's been a couple of weeks again, but we're still here and still busy.
The weather has been a little unstable the last couple of weeks and a severe
electrical storm on Monday (July 7) seemed to scatter the fish and left
Tuesday with poor results on walleyes. The reefs started to pick up again
by Thursday and most everyone went home having caught/ate enough to be
more than happy. Muskie fishing has been decent with lots of fish moving
and more than a few being boated. One group boated 10 muskies over their
week, two of which were over 40". Four or five 40+ inch fish total were
caught during the week and we'll have a lot of muskie hunters around in
the next couple of weeks to keep it going. On a personal note, your favourite
website author caught his first muskie on Thursday night (July 17) while
riding along with Mark and Jake Tollander. It was only a baby at around
32", but still a nice looking fish and all I could probably handle anyway,
being such an amateur. I was blindfolded on the way out and back and between
spots so I can't really remember where we fished, so no requests for my
services as a guide, please!! HAHAHA I'll stick to what I do best, pulling
boats, pumping gas, counting minnows and getting the weather forecast wrong.
I hope everyone is having a great summer. Send me an email if you're
bored, as I love hearing from all our guests/readers.
June 28 - July 5
Apologies to everyone waiting for me to get my butt
in gear and update the fishign and weather reports. Things have been so
busy around here so far that we can barely keep up. This is a good thing
though, as most everyone seems to be enjoying their time in Canada with
us and that is always gratifying. The week of June 28 - July 5 was a fantastic
one for the Jim Drees crew from Carrol, IA. They had 15 guys fishing muskies
and boated 34 fish total with 16 being over 35" and 7 over the 40" mark.
The two biggest were 51.5" and 49". The two big fish were caught pretty
close to home base, weren't they guys? We won't spread the exact location
all over the internet though, you have to keep a secret or two right?
I'm sure we'll tell all our guests about it though so call now if you haven't
booked yet! HAHAHA Another group of muskie fisherman has some luck as
well, boating 5 fish over a couple days on the weekend. Pictures will
be posted in the next week or so I hope, as they have all promised to send
me some to scan. Weather was pretty good most of the week as well, with
only part of one day mid-week being lost due to a short storm. I'll try
to keep the updates coming now that the Fourth of July rush has come and
gone. Thanks for staying tuned in.
June 7 - June 28
System overload. Too busy to keep up. Something had to give.
Fishing and weather was super fantastic. Most groups claimed
it was their best trips ever to LOW.
May 31 - June 7
Another week of great weather and even better fishing. Just about
everyone that has come up this yeah has left with the comment that it was
"the best fishing they ever had on LOW." The wind blew a little on
Friday, but didn't seem to change the fishing too much. Have heard
more than a few groups say they have been fishing in the rocks already, which
is very early, but who can argue with success. Bass were biting in Miles
Bay as well and some northerns and muskies were caught by accident.
The
One Year Anniversary of Storm 2002 will be on June 10.
We do have a video with some footage of the storm and the slow washing
out of the old lodge for anyone who would like to see it when they come
up.
May 24 - 31
Memorial Weekend was super for everyone that w
SADSAas on the
lake, judging by the reports I received around camp. People told me walleyes
were biting on anything they threw down and got some in 8-10 ft as well
as out deeper in 30 feet. Sand, shore, and gravel bottoms where the sand
meets the rocks were all places people mentioned. One group always heads
northwest to Sandy, North Island and the Firebag areas and they have
been bringing in some real nice fish as well. Northers were biting last
week on spinner rigs while trolling in the sand and this week, someone
brought in a 39 incher already. The weather has been great as far as temps
and wind. We are getting some rain as I write this report (Tuesday night,)
which is badly needed. Just hope the little bit of thunder doesn't scatter
the fish.
The rest of the week was super as far as weather and fishing.
Sandy Bay produced well all week while most people stayed close and didn't
burn much gas. The biggest wind of the young season blew on Friday
and that had some folks heading for home a day early. A few hardcore
groups went out later in the day, but didn't have much luck.
Opening Weekend
Opener was very successful, with everyone agreeing it was one of
the best openers they have ever seen. Mostly walleyes were caught and
found and you didn't have to go far to get them. Rabbit, Raspberry and
Mink Portage were a couple of the most popular spots. Sold lots of minnows,
as they seemed to be working best. Weather was great on the weekend and
then turned chilly for a couple days during the week, but it didn't seem
to hurt the fishing.
